Cumulus – The International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media, with its 176 member universities represent 44 countries worldwide. It is a dynamic and flexible academic forum that brings together top level educational institutions from all parts of the world.

Twice a year, a member institution hosts and arranges a 3-day Cumulus conference. The conferences serve as a platform to meet people from all over the world and over all disciplines and to share new ideas and research findings in the field of art, design and media.

The Cumulus Ekaterinburg 2012 conference will be held in Ekaterinburg, Russia, on October 4-6, 2012 and hosted by the Ural State Academy of Architecture and Arts. The conference will focus upon the Dimensions of Interaction of Design, Business and Society with themes such as:
1. How can Art help Design in Education?
2. Industry/entrepreneurship, design and the designer
3. Creativity versus business, management and marketing

Why go to Ekaterinburg, Russia?

What is happening in Russia beyond Moscow and St.Petersburg? Is there any design activity? Yes…there is a flourishing, buoyant Design community in Ekaterinburg and beyond, based upon a solid foundation of design and art education from primary school to postgraduate PhD work.

Russia is one of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China & South Africa) which Goldman Sachs has indicated will be the 6th largest economy in the world by 2050 just behind Brazil with China 1st and India 3rd.What effect will Design and Innovation in Russia have on this?

Globally the creative industries have had an enormous impact on the economies and societies of many American, European and Southeast Asian countries. Will this happen in Russia? Is it already happening?

Ekaterinburg is the capital city of Sverdlovsk, the administrative province in the Urals, a major industrial region in the Russian Federation (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sverdlovsk_Oblast). In fact, Ekaterinburg ranks third after Moscow and St. Petersburg in terms of industrial output with an extensive range of different industries, and having survived the turbulent 1990`s, the region is now demonstrating rapid growth. To find out more about the city please visit http://www.ekaterinburg.com

The city has been selected the Russian design capital for 2012.

The participants will be able to meet their Russian colleagues and will be offered an opportunity to visit two schools: the Ural State Academy of Architecture and Arts, a leading higher education institution in the fields of architecture, design and art, and the Ivan Shadr Art School. These schools have strong academic art traditions combined with the daring of young talents, which will be illustrated by student work exhibitions.
